Title
Duffield, Virginia
Description
Duffield was known during the pioneer era as "Little Flat Lick" for a salt spring in the area. And from this open area, visitors can see a notch in Powell Mountain. This is Kane Gap, the pass through which Daniel Boone and the axemen crossed into the Powell River valley and Wallen Creek.
In 1914 the Daughters of the American Revolution placed a marker for Daniel Boone Trail along the main road at the time, parallel to today's US Hwy 23. That marker was later moved and placed along US Hwy 23 at Railroad Ave., north of the intersection of US Hwys 23 and 58.
A similar marker was placed at some time during the mid-20th century by the Duff-Patt Ruritan Club at the intersection of US Hwy 23 and 58 in Duffield.
