Title

Natural Tunnel State Park

Description

Natural Tunnel State Park includes the railroad tunnel along Stock Creek which was enlarged from the "natural tunnel" that originally pierced through the mountain. Daniel Boone and the 30 axemen marking Boone's Trace in 1775 came up Stock Creek. Just as did all the settlers who followed, they went around the hill. The "natural tunnel" was not large enough for passage.

You can follow that route today along Natural Tunnel Parkway, VA Road 871 north along Stock Creek and through the gap between Cove Ridge and Purchase Ridge to Sunbright. Continue on VA Road 871 southwest to Duffield.
